About Tension and Release

Good music takes the listener on a journey. No matter what the style, whether classical sonata, country, dubstep, screamo or techno pop, composers and songwriters all use a similar toolkit of techniques to make an adventure for the listener’s ear. But where a classical composer will mainly use harmony and melody to create the tension and release, a dance music producer tends to focus more on rhythm and texture. I wrote this song to try to illustrate all these techniques in the one song! Strangely, the opening part, “Why play the same thing over and over?” is a comment on the fact that repetition is calming to a point then creates tension when you start hoping for a change!
