Learning the song

Teachers and students should print the score. It is intended that students learn the song with the dots as well as the lyrics. Students do not need to know exactly what the notation means, but can follow along with the general shape of the notation.

You can download the mp3s and put them on your ipods. You can burn them to CD. You can plug a laptop in to some speakers to practice along with. Record or video the class and upload this to your blog(s).

About Out the Door

When I was first asked to write some songs for Ping, I had shocking writer’s block. I tried all my tricks to shake it, but then suddenly it came to me: Write a song about writer’s block! I have a close friend, Sally, who I thought wouldn’t mind me embroidering her image into a song (even though it isn’t at all about her). I thought I’d better make the uncle the hero, as uncle sometimes get bad press and I’m proud of my role as an uncle. I made it a very straight verse/chorus form, but in a way that nothing quite fully repeats, to reflect the cyclical, yet shambolic nature of the creative process. Feel free to bend the melody and rhythm til it suits you. And rewrite any lyrics that don’t fit the way you would say it (or the character you choose to sing it as). Or completely rewrite the song… see if I care!

Yay, thine-a-warbling,

Mal
