To construct the percussion instruments requires an adult to do some parts. These involve drilling and hole punching. Otherwise much of the construction can be done by children.
The materials that you will require to make the Ping Bash recycled percussion instruments are:
Common materials for bass drum and snare drum
- Rope: 6-8 mm nylon (1200 mm per drum)
- Rags/old t-shirts/old-blankets
- Gaffa/cloth tape/large sticky tape
- Drill with 10mm bit – to be used only with a competant adult
- 300 mm long * 13.5-15mm thick dowel (or drum sticks)
- Various sparkly contact or coloured paper for decorating the instruments.

Coke bottle bells
These bells can only be made with Coke bottles. It’s unfortunate but true. We don’t want to encourage the drinking of this sugary caffeinated substance, but the plastic quality and shape of the bottles makes them the only candidates for these bells.
- 2 * 1.25 litre Coke bottles (empty, clean & dry)
- 2 * tyre valves
You can get these from a mechanic, or auto parts shop - 30cm wooden ruler to play the bells
- Bicycle pump
- 10 mm hollow punch (available in Bunnings or other hardware store)
- Hammer to puch holes in coke bottle caps
Shakers
- Small water bottle (300-350 ml) empty and dried
- 1/3 cup rice, lentils or fine gravel
